Pit Bull

Did I get your attention with that title??
Here's the deal:
New neighbors moved in directly behind us.
They have a PIT BULL.
We have no fence.
They don't have a fence.
Apparently there aren't any rules about this in our township (I called).
Got a fence estimate = $10,500
Can't afford that, nor do I want to spend that kind of $ on a fence.
So what do we do???
Neighbor says the dogs never bitten anyone.
I don't care, it only takes once.
It's a PIT BULL for heavens sake.
Five precious little lives run around our yard almost everyday.
So I guess we're going to have to put up a fence.
A tall one!
And we're going to do it ourselves.
(with some help from some people who know what they're doing)
I told the kids: "If the dogs are out, we go in."
Abby is now afraid to play in the yard.
If you think I'm over reacting read this.
or this
or this
I could list hundreds of these links if I had the time.
Quite honestly I feel like moving.
Will I ever be able to relax in our yard again, even with a fence?

Don't blame you for being nervous. Keep checking on the fence. I am pretty sure you can get one cheaper than that. Maybe that handy brother could come help you guys put in a fence. I know that you can get fencing at the hardware store that is already put together. You just have to dig the holes and put the post in. Try to look on the positive side, the kids will be safer all around if your backyard is fenced in. My husband and his friend put ours in when we lived in VA and neither of them is exactly a carpenter! Throw a fence building party! Good fences make good neighbors (especially if the neighbors have dogs!) I am really sorry that this has happened and I know that it has rattled your sense of safety. I pray that God will give you some peace of mind and show you a way to solve this problem! If you are feeling up to it, I was tagged to do a meme and would love for you to join us but only if you want to!

I don't blame you for being nervous and you certainly aren't over reacting. For some reason, (ahem) the only aggressive dog attacks I can think of, that have been reported by the media, are by pit bulls.....

I don't blame you for keeping the kids in if the dog is out or for wanting to put a fence up. I was attacked by a dog when I was little and it was just an average mutt. He'd never had any aggressive behavior towards anyone before that. It took me a long time before I was "ok" around dogs again. A friend of mine has a Mastiff and I haven't been to her house since she got the dog.(He's almost 3)Good luck!~Heather

our neighbors have a dog that made me so nervous when we first moved in. Neither of us have a fence but their dog isn't ever out alone, and we've gotten to know her so I don't worry much anymore.
If you need any help with a fence let us know :)

I'm sorry Judy! It's sad, too, that they had to move in right at the beginning of summer! : ( I second the fence building party. : ) My dad & granddad put up our fence. The hardest part is digging the holes for the fence posts--it's pretty intense manual labor.

I am pretty sure you can rent an "auger" to make drilling the holes for the fence a lot easier too!

If I am in the area, you ca count on me to help, at least if I can get out of work and so forth. I agree with you, I have always had bad feelings about pit bulls before I ever even heard any bad stories about them.

David's put up many fences - not hard to do, just hard, manual work. But a fenced in yard is a WONDERFUL thing....make sure the neighbor keeps their dog chained to something in th emeantime...I don't blame you at all...

oh gosh you are so not overeacting. There was a story last year about a woman who was attacked by her pitt bull. she was able to beat him off with a pan or something and lock herself in the bathroom. They are not nice dogs they can snap at anytime for no reason. I think the should be against the law.

I am right there with you on the whole dog thing. The kids have been chased a couple times by a dog in our neighborhood. I keep a baseball bat beside the back door for that very reason. Lord willing you can put a fence up for a little amount. It will go a long way in giving you peace of mind. Anna :)

Oh, Judy..I totally do not blame you one bit!!!! I am scared to death of dogs, well, at least ones that I do not know. Our neighbors have a Mastiff and a Boxer who bark at us when we leave and their fence is just a wire fence that when they jump up on it, it bends. If the dogs were really smart enough, they could be out of that fence in nothing flat.

Anyway...I'll volunteer Doug for that fence building party!!! I would not feel safe with them out there, either.

I am so with you on this Judy. Riley wwas attacked by one a couple months ago... traumatizing! the fence is worth evwery penny but you should be able to find one cheaper. Get lots of bids and make it clear to each company that you are taking bids and will go with the lowest number... it will make them work harder!
We are planning on installing our own as well. It will give much peace of mind!

If you are going to do a fence party rent a two man auger. It will be well worth it. Thankfully our neighbor who owned a German Shepherd that was born in the wild as well as two other large dogs has moved away. Our new neigbor has a pug named Sargent, but our kids call him Nelli Mae for reasons I will never know. At first he made them nervous but now they have become friends, and our neighbor gives them treats to feed the dog, which is fun.
